The air carries the comforting scent of freshly baked bread—warm, slightly yeasty, inviting you to slow down and savor a moment away from the rush. It’s the kind of place where time moves at a gentle, unhurried pace, wrapped in the steady rhythm of a neighborhood staple that feels familiar and quietly steadfast.
The bakery and deli unfold like a small treasure trove of European flavors, where every detail speaks of tradition and care. Behind the glass cases, rows of golden pretzels, soft braided breads, and dense rye beckon with an authenticity that’s hard to find beyond these walls. The deli counter invites a curious exploration, offering an array of thoughtfully curated meats and cheeses that reflect a rich culinary heritage. Here, every sandwich is made with a personable touch—layered with salami, savory mortadella, or a creamy slice of Muenster that feels less like fast food and more like a lovingly packed lunch shared among friends.
What sets this place apart is the atmosphere itself—a warm blend of genuine smiles, patient conversations, and the hum of regulars who have made Hess their go-to for generations. It’s a spot where stories quietly accumulate over time, where grandparents introduce grandkids to long-loved favorites, and newcomers are met with a welcoming openness that turns routine visits into lasting memories.
Whether you’re drawn by the authenticity of the breads baked on German steam ovens or the rare European staples filling the shelves, Hess Bakery & Deli offers a taste experience that’s comfortingly grounded, unpretentious, and deeply human. It’s less about crowds or flash, and more about simple delights—the soft crust of a pretzel roll straight from the oven, the subtle kick of a curry ketchup, or the curious assortment of candies that spark childhood nostalgia.
For those looking to discover a corner of German tradition that lives and breathes in everyday moments, Hess serves as both a destination and a community anchor—a place where past and present meet over food that’s meant to be shared and savored.

I have been going to this place since I was a small child. My grandma who was born in Germany always took us here, my father took us hear, I go hear and now have been taking my children. 4 generations to have this authentic German food. We always get Landjaeger, Large Pretzels and pretzel bread. It is also awesome because they can make sandwiches that are delicious.

I’ve been coming to Hess’ Bakery & Deli at European Square for as long as I can remember. My grandmother always brought me here when I was little, and it’s a place that has stayed special to me ever since. Every visit feels welcoming — everyone is friendly, and the fresh-made rolls and pretzels are absolutely amazing. They’re the kind of baked goods you keep thinking about after you leave. My husband especially loves it when I bring home the German spicy salami, which has become a must-buy for us. Even though it’s about a 30–40 minute drive from my house, it’s always worth it. I love that I’ve been able to bring my daughter and son here, continuing a tradition that started with my grandmother. She’s no longer with us, but every time we visit, we think of her. I hope my kids continue coming here for years to come — and maybe someday bring their own kids — because my grandma truly knew the best place for rye bread for salami sandwiches and rolls for bologna sandwiches. Everything is always fresh, and the memories tied to this place make it even more special.

Sweet people and they were very patient. The deli workers let me try different meats and seemed very passionate. I got good advice on what to try and honestly felt very welcome there. Well definitely come again!!

Wow this store had all imported German goods. What a delicacy you don’t see often in the Pacific NW! They even sell pretzels and other pretzel style breads that are great when baked. The deli in the back also has a huge assortment of uncooked sausages. If you’re looking for European snacks, come here!

Found this little gem on the recommendation of a friend and I’m glad I went. The selection of German items in the grocery spanned everything from soups and sauces to mustard to beer. If you want it, they’ve got it. The star of the show, in my opinion, is the fresh baked bread. The oven came from Germany and use a steam baking style which gives the bread a sort of moist texture. It’s really fresh. I wasn’t sure what types of salami to try, so I asked Connie for some samples. Of the three I tried I liked the zesty salami :) The staff is friendly and willing to help, in both German and English! Ask for samples. Buy some bread. Support local small businesses. We kept the bread in an airtight container for two days and it was still fresh. Otherwise, freeze and thaw.

This little shop has so many great tastes of authentic German cuisine and candies. So many mornings the line for fresh bread and pretzels is out the door! Lots of choices for fresh meats and deli!

This is a fantastic bakery. Love all the German food selection, they understand how a German meal should taste! Next door ti them is another bakery, if you take your food over there and bought food from there they will make you put the food away. Really confusing with the business next door. We loved HESS BAKERY! Would recommend this place 1000%

I've been going here for years. The German deli meats & other goodies they have are so good! Make a sandwich with the meat & their fresh rolls (brochen sp?) Across the hall from the deli/ store is the bakery/ restaurant. The baked goods are very good! Enjoy!
